Overview

Independent lab. Close to the metal.

BlackBarn Labs is an independent research and prototyping lab focused on the intersection of hardware, firmware, and software systems.

Over the past year we’ve designed, built, and iterated on a range of practical projects — from custom embedded controllers and sensor systems to full-stack tools and applied R&D prototypes. We work hands-on with real hardware (microcontrollers, custom PCBs, power systems, and mechanical assemblies) and pair it with the software needed to make those systems reliable and usable.

We take ideas from napkin sketch through working prototype, with a preference for clean, maintainable solutions that actually survive real-world use. Current work includes ongoing hardware/firmware platforms, internal tools, and applied systems that sit at the boundary between physical devices and digital control.

BlackBarn Labs is intentionally small and independent. That lets us move quickly, stay close to the metal, and focus on the work itself rather than process.

Hands-on with real hardware, not just diagrams.
02
Firmware and software in the same pass as the board.
03
Prototype until it runs — then make it maintainable.

Stay small. Stay close to the metal.

What we build

  1. 01

    Hardware / Firmware

Custom embedded controllers, sensor systems, power electronics, and mechanical assemblies — from schematic to a board that actually boots.

    MCU · PCB · SENSOR · POWER
  2. 02

    Software systems

Full-stack tools and the software that makes hardware reliable and usable — control layers, APIs, and the infrastructure underneath.

    CONTROL · API · TOOLING
  3. 03

    Prototyping

Napkin sketch to working artifact. Fast, honest builds you can hold, break, and iterate.

    SKETCH · BUILD · BREAK
  4. 04

    Applied R&D

Systems at the boundary between physical devices and digital control. Research that ends in something that runs.

    DEVICE · CONTROL · FIELD

IN PROGRESS Active prototyping of hardware/firmware platforms, internal tools, and applied systems at the physical–digital boundary.
